Frequently Asked Questions

Membership and access

There are two easy ways of becoming a Fon member.

1. Through a Fon partner (see our partners).
Fon partners with some of the world’s leading telcos, including: Belgacom, BT, MTC, Netia,   Oi, SFR, SoftBank and ZON. If you are a customer of one of our partners, you may already be a Fon member! All you have to do is activate Fon. Please contact your internet provider to find out more about activating Fon.

2. By buying a Fon device and sharing a little bit of your WiFi with the Fon network (see our devices).
Our devices work by splitting your WiFi signal into two. A private one that is just for you, and a public one, which you share with the rest of the Fon network. Both networks are secure, and since the public signal is created from the unused portion of your bandwidth, you will still be able to enjoy the same connection speeds as before. Additionally, you will not be held liable for the use of your public network.
As a sharing Fon member, you will be able to enjoy millions of free Fon hotspots all around the world.

Yes! You can buy an access pass at any of our hotspots.

Access passes allow you to connect to a Fon Spot for a given number of minutes. We offer the following types of access passes:

25-minutes: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 25 minutes. Once you buy this pass, it will expire after 25 minutes. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it.

1-hour: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 60 minutes. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it.

1-day: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 24 hours. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it.

5-day: This is a bundle of five one-day passes that can be used at all hotspots on the Fon network. The first one-day pass will expire after 24 hours. The four remaining one-day passes will be credited to your account for future connections. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, all five one-day passes will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use them.

About Fon Spots

Fon Spots are hotspots created by sharing Fon members. They are a key element of Fon since both Fon devices and partner routers broadcast a WiFi signal, creating a Fon Spot.

There are two ways by which you can create a Fon Spot:

1. Though a Fon-enabled partner router (see our partners)

If your internet provider is a Fon partner, it may already be enabled to broadcast a Fon WiFi signal, creating a Fon Spot. If that is the case, please contact your internet provider to find out more about activating Fon.

2. Through a Fon device (see our devices)

When you buy one of our devices, all you have to do is add it to your existing network by plugging it into your router. It will then start splitting your WiFi signal into two. A private one that is just for you (MyPlace), and a public one (“FON_FREE_INTERNET”), which you share with the rest of the Fon network. Both networks are secure and since the public signal is created from the unused portion of your bandwidth, you will still be able to enjoy the same connection speeds as before. Additionally, you will not be held liable for the use of your public network.
Our hotspots will always have the name Fon in them, for example: “FON_FREE_INTERNET.” In the countries where we have partnerships, our hotspot name (SSID) will reflect the partnership. Currently, our SSIDs are:

Fon: Fon WiFi, FON_FREE_INTERNET
Belgacom: FON_BELGACOM
BT: BTWiFi-with-Fon
Hrvatski Telekom (HT): HotSpot Fon
KPN: KPN Fon
MTC (MTS): FON_MTS
Netia: FON_NETIA_FREE_INTERNET
Oi: Oi WiFi Fon
SFR: SFR WiFi FON
SoftBank: FON_FREE_INTERNET
ZON: FON_ZON_FREE_INTERNET

By using our maps. Furthermore, our app allows you to find our hotspots where you are going.

A WiFi-capable device and a Fon account.

From a laptop:

1. Switch your laptop’s wireless capability.
2. Choose the Fon signal via the WiFi signal icon on your system tray and connect.
3. Open your web browser (i.e. Chrome) and a login page will appear. If it doesn’t, just type in any web address such as “www.google.com” into your browser’s address bar.
4. Log in by entering your username and password. A new web browser window will open confirming you’re connected.

From a smartphone or tablet:

1. Install the Fon app.
2. Enter your username and password.
3. Save your settings.

Note: If you do not have a Fon login yet, you can create a Fon account when you register your Fon device, or when you first buy an access pass. If you are not yet a Fon sharing member, you will need to buy an access pass to use the internet.
