An abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity. WiFi is a term used to describe the underlying technology of wireless local area networks based on IEEE 802.11 specifications. A person with a WiFi enabled device, such as a computer, telephone, or PDA can connect to the Internet when in the proximity of an access point. The great thing about WiFi is that it allows you to connect the Internet without cables, giving you greater freedom of movement either throughout your house, office, or even outside.

To install your Fonera router follow two basic steps:

1) Connect your Fonera to your broadband Internet connection or modem.

2) Register your Fonera router. Registering your router places your Fon Spot on the Fon Map and grants you free access to millions of other Fon Spots in the Fon WiFi network.

People that don’t share their broadband with the Fon Network can still connect to Fon hotspots around the world by purchasing inexpensive access passes.

A Fon Spot is a WiFi hotspot created by a person who has installed a Fonera (or a Fon enabled) router. In general, the wireless network name (SSID) of a Fon Spot contains “Fon". For example: "FON_FREE_INTERNET”.

Joining the Fon WiFi network is as simple as:

1. Buy a Fonera router or check if your ISP partners with Fon and has the Fon feature on your router.
2. Connect it to your existing broadband internet service.
3. Register it and enjoy wireless roaming access throughout the Fon network for free.
